Taking in the role of Saint Paul, after the Apostle's shipwreck on Malta - and having himself premiered a new setting of the Ave Maria in Valletta - the author reflects on the originary role of the Virgin Mary and ancient 'Venus' goddesses alongside each other.

In a new two-page special interest article 'Cello Epiphanies', David Lewiston Sharpe presents his new Sonatina for Cello and Piano completed at Christmas 2018/19 and scheduled for performance in Germany. Endorsed by Julian Lloyd Webber, the Sonatina searches for new lyricism at the turn of the year, with a central 'song without words' completed on the eve of Epiphany 2019.

Published twice a year, the London Cello Society newsletter promotes the work and activities of the society, its membership and exectutives, concerning all things cello-related!

In a new five-page feature 'Secrets of the Desert', David Lewiston Sharpe contrasts the lives and spiritual inspiration of two ascetics that vie for the historical status of the 'first hermit'. The context is the origin of monasticism in the Egyptian desert of the early centuries CE - and the political and imperial panorama against which Saint Anthony and Saint Paul the Hermit asserted their claim.

In a new four-page feature 'Oriental Odes - Egypt and the English Romantics', David Lewiston Sharpe considers how the problematic issues of 'orientalism' (as defined in part by intellectual and cultural commentator Edward Said) were already vividly expressed in the great poetry of Keats, Shelley and their contemporaries. Yet, there is evidence of a redemptive spirit in their ultimately universal work.

Drawing on his musicological background, writer and composer David Lewiston Sharpe was commissioned to write introductory essays for a series of scores in the Eulenburg Audio+Score series. These include Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor Op. 64, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.5 in E flat 'Emperor' Op. 73, and Rossini 2 Overtures, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Guillaume Tell.

The Eulenburg miniature scores are the required resource for study of great works in the established repertoire of classical concert music.

New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians (7th Edn)

Contributing author and editorial staff (1997-2000)

A contributor to the last print edition of the seminal Grove Dictionary of Music, David Lewiston Sharpe was also on the editorial staff of this historic piublication brought to its conclusion as a printed publication at the turn of the century. The encyclopedia comprises 29 volumes, each more than 800 pages, with over 5,000 articles on contemporary composers alone.
